how does a photoresistor work

A photoresistor, also known as a light-dependent resistor, is a type of resistor that changes its resistance depending on the amount of light it is exposed to. This makes it an essential component in light-sensitive devices such as automatic night lights, outdoor lighting systems, and light meters. The photoresistor operates on the principle of the photoelectric effect, where the conductance of the material changes due to the absorption of photons. When light falls on the photoresistor, the energy from the photons is absorbed by the semiconductor material, causing a decrease in its resistance. Conversely, when there is low or no light, the resistance of the material increases. This property makes photoresistors extremely useful for activating or deactivating electronic circuits based on the ambient light levels.
