The MCP23017 is a 16-bit I/O expander with serial interface. It provides easy and versatile expansion of general-purpose I/O pins for microcontroller applications. With its 16-bit remote I/O configuration, it allows users to add more digital I/O pins to their microcontroller without using up more physical pins. This device features two I2C-bus interfaces that can be configured to operate either as a master or a slave. Each of the 16 ports can be individually configured as either an input or an output, and can be configured to interrupt the microcontroller, reducing the need for continuous polling. The MCP23017 is designed to be addressable by multiple devices on the I2C bus, allowing for greater flexibility and control in a variety of applications. It is compatible with a wide range of microcontrollers and can be used in various applications such as industrial control, home automation, and consumer electronics.
