Varistor Definition

A varistor is a versatile electronic component used to protect sensitive electrical and electronic circuits from voltage surges and transient over-voltages. It is a type of resistor that behaves like a non-linear voltage-dependent resistor, meaning it offers high resistance at low voltages and low resistance at high voltages. Varistors are made from a semiconductor material, usually metal oxide, and are capable of rapid response to transient voltage spikes, resulting in immediate clamping of the voltage to a safe level. This ensures the protection of valuable equipment and sensitive components within a circuit.
